Adults 50 and over and children are two growing segments of our population that are most impacted by the public health problem of obesity. In 2008 OASIS partnered with WellPoint Foundation to deliver a program which unites these two generations in the fight against obesity. A $313,000 WellPoint Foundation grant enabled OASIS to enage adults in 8 cities as mentors to teach healthy lifelong habits to kids in grades K-5.
In 2010 WellPoint made a grant of $2.7 million to expand the CATCH Healthy Habits program during 2011-12. OASIS is taking the program to 18 cities in 14 states, working with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, YMCAs, schools and other community partners.
Adults benefit as they are promoting healthy habits for themselves as well as the children. Volunteers report they eat more vegetables, are more likely to read nutrition labels, and are more aware of foods they should eat less frequently. And they are glad to join forces with other volunteers to combat obesity in their community.
