The Lewis & Clark Exploration and The Louisiana Purchase

Known respectively as “the greatest real estate deal in history” and the “Great American Odyssey,” these two topics have endless fascination. In the first week we will put historical puzzle pieces as disparate as a bath, a Haitian general, a virus and flatboats into a picture of the “real estate deal.” In the second week, secret communiqués to Congress and foreign diplomats, faulty maps, eye wash and grizzles will combine into an engrossing picture of the

“Great American Odyssey.” Students will receive a copy of a Lewis & Clark textbook.

U.S. Grant was the 18th president of the United States and the Union general who accepted Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House. You’ve seen the cabin he built at Grant’s Farm along Gravois. This class will explore the extraordinary story of his early links to our area, his role as soldier and president and the memoirs he wrote before he died.

Syria & Lebanon

These two nations were created by the French after WWI.  Before that time, both were part of the Turkish/Ottoman Empire. Both received their independence in the mid

1940s. Since that time both have been involved in almost continuous conflicts within their own societies and with Israel. This class will focus mainly on this period of time.  A question and answer period will follow along with time for discussion.

Understanding Imperial Japan

At the end of the 18th Century, both Asia and the Western Powers were poised on the edge of a new era in world history. Examine the relationship between the Western

Powers and East Asia and how this evolved. We will focus on the forced opening of Japan by the West and the United States in 1850s which resulted in the Japanese embarking

upon a campaign of modernization. By the end of the 19th century they had achieved their objectives and developed their economy, military and established their position in the system of international relations. This course will explore these developments and examine the character of the country to come to an understanding of Imperial Japan.

These colorful characters include the woman who burned London to the ground for the rape of her daughters, the Irish pirate queen who negotiated with Elizabeth I, notorious spies, leaders in the fields of theoretical physics, the temperance movement and the NAACP.  Their relatively unknown true stories may surprise, amaze, delight or intrigue you, but they will never bore you.

Frank Lloyd Wright in Ebsworth Park:  The Kraus House

Take a guided tour of the first house that famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright built in St. Louis. One of only five Wright designs in Missouri, the home is notable for retaining all original Wright-designed furnishings and fabrics. Home is located at 120 North Ballas Road in Kirkwood.

Strengthen, tone and lengthen core muscles, build overall strength and stamina, increase flexibility and improve posture with this class designed for and taught by an adult 50+. Participants should be comfortable moving from standing to the floor and will need to supply their own mat.
