OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring

"The OASIS Tutoring Program has given me a lift, a sense of purpose," says Ila Dickson, one of numerous tutors honored by OASIS in the month of May for her five years of service in the Tutoring Program.  "We become part of the school family, we get to know each other  . . . I am having a wonderful time!"

OASIS Tutoring celebrated its 20th Anniversary last year.  Locally, the program has been in existence for 11 years in Springfield, 10 years in Eugene and six years in Harrisburg.  Tutors are paired with young children in kindergarten through third grade to work on language acquisition, reading and writing skills.  Tutors work in five local districts during school hours:  Eugene, Springfield, Harrisburg or Pleasant Hill, and are placed at the beginning and middle of the school year.

For information about the program, please contact Pat Rankin, Tutor Program Coordinator at 687-9178 or email.

"There are so many needy kids, and the OASIS program gives them some balance and one-on-one attention that can be lacking in a crowded classroom," says Leola Giles, former coordinator for the program in Harrisburg, where Dickson started tutoring five years ago during her husband's illness.  "The children's self-confidence just zooms with that kind of attention."
