OASIS Receives Wisdom Works Grant to Foster Civic Engagement

Pittsburgh OASIS has received one of six grants from the MetLife Foundation and National Council on Aging to implement Wisdom Works: Building Better Communities. The project will foster civic engagement among mature adults working in self-directed teams. OASIS will recruit and train teams of volunteers to implement Active Generations, an intergenerational program to address the problem of childhood obesity and promote healthy lifestyle habits through two Pittsburgh after-school programs managed by Citiparks. Be Active Every Day

Physical activity is the best thing we can do for our health. Experts have turned up a long list of benefits that come from being physically active. What's holding you back? Health concerns? Not enough time, energy or motivation? Maybe you're not sure where to start.

The OASIS class Active Living Every Day can help you find realistic ways to make activity part of your daily routine. You'll learn how to make activity a part of your everyday routine, overcoming barriers that stand in the way. Most important, you'll learn skills to develop habits that will improve your health and well-being.

Ted Kerin is 86 years young – surprising, perhaps, since he was in quite a slump not long ago after his wife passed away. What brought about this drastic change? With the encouragement of his daughters, Ted began attending the OASIS Active Living Every Day program at the Mt. Washington Senior Center back in 2005. After a few sessions, Ted became a new man.

“This is one of the best things they(OASIS) could’ve done,” he said. “They go out of their way to satisfy the seniors.”
