First OASIS Oscar Party Is A Winner

In conjunction with an OASIS class on Oscar nominated films, volunteer Aldine King headed a committee which organized a pre-Oscar party. Held on Friday, March 5th, the party included Oscar-related games and prizes, clips of some of this year's nominees, a roomful of film-related decorations, Oscar-shaped gold cookies, popcorn, movie candy and champagne.

After completing ballots with their choice of winners, attendees each went home with a bag of goodies, tickets to the NW Film Center and a ballot to track the final Oscar results. The OASIS attendees know how to pick them. Their choices matched those of the Academy exactly. They also voted in 18 other categories and the person with the most correct was OASIS member Georgia Conn.  Georgia received a $25 gift certificate for Regal cinemas.  Congratulations Georgia!

Also included in the evening was a remembrance of film class teach Jack Booch, by Maynard Orme, former head of OPB. Jack was a multi-talented actor, director, script-writer, and in the words of a friend, "ranconteur, educator and minister." A tireless and generous OASIS volunteer, Jack died in February after a battle with cancer. He will be missed for his energy, intelligence, kindness, wisdom and strong opinions.

Holiday Hotel Lobby Walking Tour

OASIS walking tour participants pose in front of the downtown Hilton Hotel tree for a quick break and photo opportunity.	Participants braved record-setting cold by donning warm gear for the Hotel Walking tour on December 9th.	Charles and Sue Landers check out the elegant tree in the Governor Hotel.
Decorative wintery arrangements grace the public walkways at the Governor Hotel.	The fireplace makes a great spot to gather on a very cold afternoon at the Governor Hotel.

 

Peace and Goodwill event, Saturday, December 12th.

Dr. John Pearson, a physician from Physician's for Social Responsibility spoke about the effects of war at our Peace and Goodwill event.	Dr. John Pearson joins participants for a gourment box lunch.	Anne Weiss, poet and performer, shares her meaningful lyrics with the OASIS audience.

Portland Public Schools magnet for the arts school, Buckman Elementary, sent the fouth and fifth grade choir to entertain at the Peace & Goodwill event.	The day long celebration concluded with a moving performance by the Satori Men's Choir.

Second AT&T Cell Phone Class Another Big Success

OASIS participants received free 20-minute appointments with volunteer coaches from our partner, AT&T, to learn new skills on their personal phones. Participants brought phone challenges and questions along with their basic models to I-Phones for free instructions."This is a program we hope to repeat in 2010," said Jane Griffen, OASIS Program Coordinator.  Check the Computers & Technology class list for upcoming courses in a variety of technologies that make communications easier.

"Fiddler on the Roof" event: Deserving of a standing ovation!

Thank you to all who made our visit from Charles Troy a huge success.  Forty people joined us in our main classroom at the downtown Macy's to listen to a terrific presentation.  Charles brought with him video clips, pictures and songs that cannot even be heard in the current Broadway show! OASIS Portland was able to offer discounted tickets to the show when it comes in August.  Bob Rawson and Bob Sutter from the Portland Center for the Performing Arts also gave a presentation on five of the most well-known show venues in Portland.  This two-hour event was a terrific look back at the history of Broadway musicals and at the origins of Fiddler on the Roof.  Below are some pictures from the event.
