Hiking to good health

Gloria Mabie regards OASIS as part of her family — a caring community of friends who are there for each other in good times and in bad. She joined the Syracuse chapter of OASIS in 2002 after retiring from teaching. She loves being with other people and sharing ideas, so taking classes and leading presentations seemed only natural. Gloria and her late husband took many trips together. She shares her love of travel with OASIS members by presenting slide shows and educational reviews of her trips. She also frequently travels with other OASIS members, to Europe and beyond. But it has grown into so much more than that.

In the nine years that Gloria has been involved with OASIS she has participated in over 300 classes. She is currently taking four health and fitness classes and leads a class called OASIS Hikers for Health. Gloria is a member of the Adirondack Mountain Club and wanted to bring that experience to OASIS. The Hikers for Health hike trails in county and state parks and even go into the foothills of the Adirondacks. Gloria’s hiking and fitness classes were interrupted in 2008 when she broke her neck. Wearing a collar and unable to drive or participate in all the activities she loved, Gloria says her OASIS family rallied around her during her recovery. Friends from OASIS came to her house with food and fellowship, volunteered to drive her where she needed to go, and kept her spirits up while she worked to heal and get back in shape.
Stronger than ever, with an unbeatable spirit, Gloria is grateful for the caring community she has found at OASIS.
