Pat and Carl Masten keep current with OASIS

Pat Masten and her husband, Carl, are so passionate about OASIS classes (they’ve taken more than 200 between them) that when they moved to an independent living facility, they literally brought OASIS with them.

Pat and Carl first got involved with OASIS 10 years ago and since that time, Pat has taken 133 classes to Carl’s 123. “We have benefitted from OASIS in so many ways,” says Pat. “OASIS keeps us young at heart by helping us to better understand our world, our health and our environment. And we’ve made some very special friendships with other OASIS members.”

When Pat and Carl moved to the Nottingham Senior Living Community a few years ago, they began recruiting friends within the independent living facility to OASIS classes, according to Lauren Feiglin, executive director of the Syracuse OASIS.

“Pat and Carl have a great thirst for learning -- so much so, that when they moved, their fervor for all things OASIS, especially instructors Tom Henry and John Langdon, led to a “partnership” between OASIS and (the facility),” Lauren says. “The space is given to us free of charge. A “win-win” thanks to Pat!”

Now, many OASIS classes are held right at the Nottingham, so Pat and Carl continue to take up to six different courses each semester – some at the Syracuse OASIS location, and others in their independent living facility.

“Our OASIS classes keep us busy and give us interesting things to talk about,” says Pat. “We have many friends in the facility and from all over who come to these classes and love it.”

Lauren says the Mastens also contribute a great deal to OASIS by giving of their time and by making donations and encouraging businesses to do the same.

“Pat was a key player in planning the September 11, 2002 Memorial Event in DeWitt, New York,” says Lauren. “She created and organized a meaningful event, asked OASIS Chorus members to participate and asked OASIS volunteers to serve as ushers.”

Pat says she’s happy to help OASIS. “The volunteers and staff are wonderful and so organized and I can’t say enough about the classes. We’ve rescheduled vacations and arranged surgery around OASIS classes taught by Tom Henry and John Langdon,” Pat says. “We love everything about OASIS.”
