Active Start combines Active Living Every Day - a behavior change discussion class, and ExerStart - a beginning level exercise class, to help you introduce physical activity into your life.
The weekly Active Living Every Day discussion groups introduce behavior change strategies to help you fit physical activity into your daily life in a realistic way. ExerStart is a moderately paced exercise program, designed to accommodate adults who are out of shape or who have not been exercising due to an injury or illness. Participants are measured for changes in functional fitness, endurance, flexibility, and muscle strength.
A study published in The Gerontologist provides evidence
that the combined Active Start program of behavior change support and exercise helps older adults improve their physical health. The program is the winner of a 2006 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Innovation in Prevention Award.
