Don and Helen Debner, both 78, raised nine children but hadn't had enough.

They decided to help other people's children, and are now among the longest-serving volunteers in a program that pairs older adults with primary students for an entire school year. This fall, the Debners began their 15th year as tutors for the OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program.

The pace is moderate as Kay Smith leads her class in chair exercises, floor exercises and line dancing, for a cardiovascular workout. The group follows Smith's instructions, lifting weights and squeezing sponges, to work every par of their bodies at their own pace.

"I take them from the top of their heads to the tip of their toes," says Smith, 86, who has taught the class for 18 years. "This gets people out and socializing."

The Live Strong class for seniors hits its pace on the first floor of the Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital on Medical Drive, a new OASIS location, from 8:45 a. m. to 9:45 a. m. Mondays and Wednesdays. more

Gloria Salas-Jennings and Alison Romero share stories once a week.

Recently Jennings, 70, and Alison, 9, sat in small purple chairs, knee to knee, in a corner of the library at Cenizo Park Elementary on the West Side where the marquee outside read: "Over 50 read to a child at this school."

The message explains Gloria and Alison's 61-year age gap, but it isn't a barrier - they're always on the same page. more
