News AoA's You Can! Steps to Healthier Aging Campaign Recognizes Joint Project of OASIS and San Antonio Partners March 16, 2005 Project SIEN (Seniors Involved in Exercise and Nutrition) in San Antonio is one of 17 projects recognized by The U.S. Administration on Aging (AoA) as a You Can! Program Champion. SIEN is a diabetes prevention program for Hispanic seniors provided through a collaboration between the Bexar Area Agency on Aging, OASIS and key community partners. Participants at six community locations are learning how to choose low-fat, reduced sugar meals and increase their daily physical activity. Volunteers provide leadership and encouragement. Key partners in the San Antonio project include OASIS, Bexar Area on Aging, the Alamo Area Council of Governments, The City of San Antonio and the Texas Diabetes Institute. The program is designed for mature adults at risk for, or recently diagnosed with Type II diabetes. Physical activity and proper nutrition are keys to the prevention or control of Type II diabetes. OASIS is providing "The Dish on Diet" and "Taking Charge of Your Health," two HealthStages courses that promote healthy food choices. Since most of the 115 participants are Hispanic and mainly Spanish speaking, both courses have been translated into Spanish. OASIS also offers the ExerStart and Active Living Every Day courses to help people make physical activity part of their daily routine, and trains volunteers to help participants stay motivated. The You Can! Steps to Healthier Aging campaign aims to boost physical activity and improve food choices among older Americans, and has enrolled more than 1,850 partners nationwide since the campaign launch last September. "The You Can! Program Champions are working with us as partners to encourage healthier lifestyle choices among older adults that can save and improve the quality of many lives," said AoA Assistant Secretary Josefina Carbonell. "AoA congratulates these You Can! Champions for joining the campaign and for spreading the word about the importance of prevention among the older adults in local communities."
