OASIS Receives $778,424 in Grants from the Missouri Foundation for Health
to Improve Physical and Mental Health for Mature Adults
Two Grants Will Support Programs for Adults in St. Louis and St. Francois County
ST. LOUIS, January 24, 2006 - OASIS has received a two-year $300,000 grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health to offer "The OASIS Healthy Life Program," a comprehensive obesity prevention program. The program combines physical activity, nutrition education, ongoing support and behavior change strategies to support older adults in making physical activity and dietary changes.
Adults age 50 and older will participate in research-based physical activity and nutrition behavior-change programs and neighborhood based peer-led discussion groups. Lay leaders will be trained to lead the discussion groups to help support participants' lifestyle changes that address obesity and physical inactivity. Working in partnership with Lutheran Senior Services, St. Andrews Resources for Seniors, Mid-East Area Agency on Aging and St. Louis Area Agency on Aging, OASIS will offer the project to 700 older adults living in the 63136 and 63108 zip codes.
The Missouri Foundation for Health awarded a second grant of $478,424 over three years to OASIS to offer the "OASIS Elderly Wellness Program" in cooperation with Parkland Health Center and BJC Behavioral Health. The purpose of the program is to improve mental wellness among rural older adults and encourage utilization of mental health services. The program targets older adults age 55 and over residing in the St. Francois County. The project will improve mental health through peer-led discussion groups, health education classes that address mental wellness, nutrition, physical activity and chronic diseases and referrals to more intensive mental health treatment. More than 600 adults will be reached during the grant period. A social worker will be hired to lead the project activities.
The St. Louis-based OASIS Institute is the national administrative office for a network of OASIS centers located in 25 cities throughout the United States. Offering challenging programs in the arts, humanities, health, technology and volunteer service, OASIS strengthens communities by providing lifelong learning and service opportunities that inspire mature adults to pursue vibrant, healthy, productive and meaningful lives.
Funding for both projects was provided by the Missouri Foundation for Health, a philanthropic organization whose vision is to improve the health of the people in the communities it serves.
