OASIS Awarded $45,000 Grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for Intergenerational Healthy Lifestyles Program
SAN ANTONIO - April 11, 2006 - OASIS has received a $45,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, through its Active for Life national program, to offer the OASIS Active Generations program, an intergenerational nutrition and physical activity program at two federally-funded, Learning Tree after school programs in San Antonio.
OASIS was one of four sites across the nation selected to create a program in which different generations could work together to prevent obesity and increase physical activity.
Active Generations is based on a nationally recognized school nutrition curriculum developed by BJC HealthCare's School Outreach Program in St. Louis, Missouri. The program brings together mature adults and children in grades 3-5 to make environmental changes in their community that support healthier lifestyles through nutrition and physical activity. Environmental changes might include, for example, developing and maintaining walking trails and planting gardens. The 18-month project will be piloted by San Antonio OASIS and the Learning Tree after-school program in the Northside Independent School District.
OASIS is a national nonprofit educational organization designed to enhance the quality of life for mature adults. Offering challenging programs in the arts, humanities, wellness, technology and volunteer service, OASIS creates opportunities for older adults to continue their personal growth and provide meaningful service to the community. OASIS is sponsored in San Antonio by Foley's, the City of San Antonio, Warm Springs Rehabilitation Center and WellMed. More information is available at www.oasisnet.org.
Active for Life is a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation national initiative to increase the number of American adults age 50 and older who engage in regular physical activity.
