OASIS Plans to Expand Programs to Reach a Broader Audience
Atlantic Philanthropies Grant To Support Expansion Plan

February 8, 2007

Blueprint illustratikon The OASIS Institute, a national education organization dedicated to strengthening communities through lifelong learning, healthy lifestyles and civic engagement opportunities for mature adults, plans to expand its programs to reach a broader audience of adults age 50 and older across the country. To support this effort, The Atlantic Philanthropies is providing a $150,000 grant to OASIS, so it can develop a business plan for expansion.

"OASIS is well-positioned to address the needs of a broader audience," said Marcia Kerz, president of The OASIS Institute. "Over the past 25 years OASIS has developed a comprehensive program to help adults stay active, independent, healthy and engaged in the community. In recent years we have been able to reach more underserved adults by partnering with community organizations to offer programs in their neighborhoods, and by training peer leaders in those neighborhoods to teach classes. The business plan we are developing through this grant will identify strategies and resources needed to significantly expand and sustain this outreach across the country."

The focus on training peers in each community as program leaders is part of a nationwide trend to encourage greater involvement in communities. "Current social policy is addressing only part of the aging issue," said Tom Endres, vice president for Civic Engagement at the National Council on Aging. "It is focused on meeting the need for services as people - mostly in their 80s and 90s - become frail and decline. The untold story is how older Americans represent our best hope for the future through constructive civic engagement in their communities. We need all ages of older Americans to contribute and strengthen all levels of society."

OASIS will work with Root Cause, a non-profit strategy consulting firm, to create a five-year business plan for increasing its impact by:
  • Building the capacity and sustainability of the organization,
  • Ensuring that participants continue to receive high quality services through its existing centers, and
  • Providing quality programs and services to a broader spectrum of underserved older adults.
"With a viable plan in place, OASIS will be prepared to move ahead in late 2007 with a blueprint for expanding programs and partnering with other organizations to make an even greater impact in mobilizing mature adults to strengthen their communities in the next 25 years," said Kerz.
