News OASIS Receives National Leadership Award from NCOA March 7, 2007 CHICAGO - The OASIS Institute received a national leadership award from the National Council on Aging (NCOA) at its annual joint conference with the American Society on Aging in Chicago, IL. OASIS received the Jack Ossofsky Award, which is given to individuals or organizations that have taken a creative, new idea and developed it into a successful program, service, or policy that helps older people achieve vital aging. Jack Ossofsky was a former president of NCOA.
Sandra King, past chair of the NCOA Board of Directors and chair of the Award Committee, said "Through its extensive work in lifelong learning and the contributions that retired people offer, OASIS has created a new and engaging perspective on the possibilities that exist for older persons and for their communities."
NCOA President and CEO James Firman said, "NCOA is proud to present this award to the OASIS Institute for its substantial contributions to improving the lives of older Americans."
OASIS is a national nonprofit education organization that strengthens communities by providing lifelong learning and service opportunities that inspire mature adults to pursue vibrant, healthy, productive and meaningful lives. Programs in the arts, humanities, health, technology and volunteer service are offered in 25 cities through Macy's stores and community partners such as housing communities, healthcare providers, faith-based organizations, school districts and community agencies. OASIS was founded in 1982 by Marylen Mann, current board chair, with a two-year grant from the U. S. Administration on Aging to demonstrate the feasibility of a public-private partnership.
"We feel very honored to receive this award and are grateful to the U. S. Administration on Aging for recognizing the value of public-private partnerships, and to Federated Department Stores" said Mann. "The centers they provide in Macy's stores are a vibrant setting that is a magnet for people seeking intellectual stimulation, physical health and social engagement."
Marcia Kerz, president of OASIS, said "NCOA has provided valuable leadership and guidance as we have worked over the last several years to offer our programs to a broader audience. We look forward to working with our partners across the country to bring OASIS opportunities to more communities."
