The Immigrant Experience Continues
This summer we'll explore the passions of many members - food and film. One of our most lively instructors, Ned O'Malia, will kick-off our food-related classes with a series on "Our Food: Immigrant, Ethnic and American," which explores the influences of various waves of immigration on the way we eat. You'll also have the opportunity to experience cuisine from other cultures at two exciting and educational dining evenings, one includes a Belly Dance performance. Members are sure to find classes that engage them among our diverse offerings on history, music, literature, current events, religion, and New Mexico.

For an entertaining afternoon, OASIS is offering a Chautauqua performance portraying several women who traveled west to make a new life. Other exciting topics sure to get members thinking are: a study of pre-Chaco, examination of the Bible in world history, and a look at religious terrorists and how they see themselves.

Our travel offerings this term include a visit to the Taos Feast Day Corn Dance, a tour of historic spots in Valencia County, the Heron Lake Osprey Festival and Churches of the Southern Sangre de Cristos, and for a refreshing afternoon, a float or rafting trip down the Rio Grande.

OASIS Intergenerational Tutor Program Honored

Heather Wilson as an "unsung hero" during an awards reception for National Women's History Month March 2008. This award is given to recognize exceptional women in our community who may not otherwise receive the appreciation they deserve. Pat was nominated by tutor Margaret Krahenbuhl. Congratulations and thanks to Pat Mallory and the Tutors in the OASIS Intergenerational Tutor Program!

Be a Hero! Be a Tutor!

Spending an hour a week helping a child develop his or her reading skills can truly change a life. One OASIS tutor said: "Loretta has gained so much confidence since we began working together this past year." The lives of tutors are also enriched. Children give their tutors a feeling of connectedness, especially when their families live at a distance. Another tutor said: "I am surprised by how much I have gained by spending time with Rich."

Through the OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring program, volunteers, school districts and OASIS work together to help children build reading skills, self-esteem and positive attitudes toward learning. Training and materials are provided; no teaching experience is needed.

OASIS currently has 87 tutors serving in 20 Albuquerque Public Schools. Tutors are assigned to an elementary school near their home where they work with one child, referred by the child's teacher, one hour each week for an entire school year.

Update: Next tutor training is September 23 and 25. Call Pat Mallory, Tutor Coordinator, at 889-0927 for more information.

Volunteers
Volunteers are the heart and soul of the program. We are grateful for the time, energy and commitment of our dedicated group of volunteers. There are many benefits to becoming an OASIS volunteer. As a volunteer, you'll have the opportunity to participate in an exciting and innovative national program, share your skills and talents, contribute to the successful aging of mature adults; and socialize with and meet new friends. In additionl to tutoring children who are learning to read, volunteers represent OASIS at community events and help run the center on a daily basis. Find out more about our volunteer opportunities.
