Gerontology Institute Binds PeaceHealth Closer to OASIS

OASIS, founded in 1982 on the premise of community collaboration, begins a five-year contractual commitment with PeaceHealth as the new Gerontology Institute at Sacred Heart Medical Center unfolds. PeaceHealth is building on the success of its senior programs by establishing the Gerontology Institute at Sacred Heart Medical Center. Over the last 18 years, what was formerly the Center for Senior Health has grown dramatically.

"OASIS was founded on the concept of strategic alliance and community collaboration," said Elizabeth Scholze Schmidt, director of OASIS Education Center. "We will be a component of the Gerontology Institute for the health education of our aging population, and that is a very exciting place for OASIS to be."

The Gerontology Institute at Sacred Heart Medical Center will enfold all of PeaceHealth's current services under its auspices: Clinical Programs, Research, Geriatric Education, and Community Collaboration, and OASIS will offer PeaceHealth's health education programs.

"OASIS will serve a vital role in advancing the Gerontology Institute's health education and community collaboration goals. Our vision is that the Institute be one of the premier programs of its kind in the nation, and also be an attractive place for geriatric medical professionals to practice," said Dan Reece, Executive Director of the Gerontology Institute.

The Gerontology Institute at Sacred Heart Medical Center comes about at a time of geographical transition and immense growth for Sacred Heart Medical Center. Once the hospital moves from its current site at the University District into its new home at RiverBend in Springfield, the buildings at the old hospital will be remodeled beginning in 2008. The Gerontology Institute will be located among the new and renovated buildings on 13th and Hilyard, where a smaller hospital will also be sited.

The OASIS Education Center will continue its commitment to enriching the lives of mature adults through quality educational opportunities in the arts and humanities - along with the health education classes - and challenging volunteer offerings.
