OASIS Offers Active Start in Greater Downtown Indianapolis
Active Start is a comprehensive fitness and wellness program for adults 55 and older. The program combines Active Living Every Day, a behavior-change program that helps people find ways to incorporate physical activity into their daily routine, and Exerstart, an exercise program. It is funded in Indianapolis by the Anthem Foundation.
The program was recognized October 2006 by HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt with the national Innovation Prevention Award. OASIS was one of only nine organizations to receive the award and was the only non-profit organization among the awardees. More
In summer 2006 Kimberly Rusununguko, program coordinator, conducted Active Start sessions Tuesday and Thursday at the Fountain Square Center and at Goodwin Plaza. In 2007 two classes started at the Center Township HealthPlex and another class began at the Christamore House.
Volunteers neededOASIS will offer a new series of 20 week Active Start sessions this summer. We really need volunteers who could help support these sessions as Active Start or Exerstart Lay Leaders, helping to facilitating these weekly sessions. Flexible volunteer hours are available as well as small stipends. Please call Kimberly Rusununguko, 317-895-9976 for more information on how you can help older adults become more active and involved through this proven program. Please watch this site for news about future expansion of the OASIS Active Start program. |
