OASIS Receives Wisdom Works Grant to Foster Civic Engagement
Pittsburgh OASIS has received one of six grants from the MetLife Foundation and National Council on Aging to implement Wisdom Works: Building Better Communities. The project will foster civic engagement among mature adults working in self-directed teams. OASIS will recruit and train teams of volunteers to implement Active Generations, an intergenerational program to address the problem of childhood obesity and promote healthy lifestyle habits through two Pittsburgh after-school programs managed by Citiparks. "I don't want this class to ever be over!" says Austin Steele during a session with Richard Adamson, his OASIS tutor. They play reading games, make up stories and enjoy spending time together each week at Shaffer Primary School in Woodland Hills, Pennsylvania. With Adamson's help, the second-grader has improved his reading from 18 words a minute to 89 words a minute since the beginning of the school year. The two were featured in a recent story in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Walking with friends Be Active Every Day
Physical activity is the best thing we can do for our health. The OASIS class Active Living Every Day can help you find realistic ways to make activity part of your daily routine.

Ted Kerin got involved in the program after his wife died. Kerin had, in his words, "let my mind and body go to pot." He stayed inside most days watching television and eating junk food. He took the class at the Mt. Washington Senior Center and is enjoying being active again. "The class gave me a lift," Kerin says. "I had a chance to be with people who were understanding and helped me want to do activities and get back into life again. I haven't felt this good mentally and physically in a long time." Read more about Ted Kerin's story.
