Opera performers Students and OASIS Members Collaborate on Opera
Over the last school year, a group of 25 "seniors" from San Diego High School's arts academy and OASIS met weekly to write an opera. The project brought together adults with a lifetime of experiences, students on the verge of adulthood and specialists from the San Diego Opera to create original musical theater. In the process the members of this intergenerational group have discovered a mutual love of music and language and a shared sense of humanity.

"No matter who we are, where we come from, we all go through the same experiences. Life is universal," said Rodney Johnson, a 10th grader. His partner, 71-year old Eleanor Little added, "The things we yearn for even at our age, the young people yearn for. We have similar fear, similar happiness, sadness, pain and joy." The final product entitled "The Singing Mirror" debuted March 22 at the San Diego Concourse. The project was featured in the San Diego Union-Tribune. The full story is available here.

Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are the heart and soul of the program. OASIS volunteers tutor children who are learning to read, represent OASIS at community events, and help run the center on a daily basis. Find out more about our volunteer opportunities.

OASIS is sponsored in San Diego by Macy's Foundation and Aging and Independence Services of San Diego County.
