![]() Marian Brown shares her talent and love of music Along with her sheet music, Marian Brown brings her training and talent to the Pittsburgh OASIS chorus every Tuesday. As the piano accompanist for the OASIS chorus, she inspires others through her dedication and love of music. "Marian's gift to OASIS is priceless. She shares her talent with us and truly makes a difference," says Gail Weisberg, Pittsburgh OASIS director.
In 1987, Brown joined OASIS after retiring from music education in local Brentwood grade schools. Only a year after the Pittsburgh location opened, she began singing in the chorus and turning pages for the accompanist before filling in the position. Now she confers with the choir director, Dale Lutton, on music and repertoire.
While music is a fulfilling part of her OASIS experience, Brown's friendships here have been even more valuable to her. She has encouraged members of her church choir to join OASIS and sustained a lasting friendship with the past chorus director, Mary Faines. Friendship is an important part for many members; she notes the friendly chatter among the members before practice starts. "We have fun with music. This interaction is good for mental health, as well as physical health."
When Brown broke her hip in 2005, she was overwhelmed by the response from her fellow OASIS members. "They sent cards and called on the phone. I really appreciated that."
The OASIS community is an important part of Brown's life. "There are a lot of really good things here. I feel that I should be here." Other members are thankful for her contribution as well.
"It keeps my hand in music," Brown says. "It gives me a purpose. I feel wanted and needed here."
