OASIS tutors are mentors and friends to children who are learning to read. Through the OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program, volunteers, schools and OASIS work together to help young children build reading skills and positive attitudes toward learning.

Tutors receive 12 hours of initial training, and continuing support through regular tutor meetings where they can share experiences, solve problems, and build friendships.

Volunteers have expressed great satisfaction in being able to make a positive difference. One OASIS tutor writes about her experience:

"I believe this program is rewarding for both me and my student. I can really see the improvement in her reading, maturity, and social skills!"

Since 1989, OASIS tutors have helped more than 250,000 children learn to read. The program is available in 900 plus schools, in more than 100 school districts.

Test Scores Document Positive Outcomes of OASIS Tutoring
Each year teachers across the country complete evaluations of the impact of OASIS tutoring. This year they reported improvement in academic performance for 89% of OASIS students.

Reading test results have also shown that children who work with OASIS tutors improve their scores on mandated, standardized reading tests. A study by Judith Kamper, Ed.D. in several school districts showed improvement in reading scores for 95% of students working with OASIS tutors. Almost two-thirds of the students increased their scores by one full year.

"Children who have trouble with reading often are unable to make a whole year's progress within a school year, so the increases reported in this study can be considered significant," Kamper says. Read the report (in pdf format).
