space space Tutor Power helps tutors tap into their students' imaginations

Mary Butorac and her student Ricardo make a booklet about whales, one of the activities in the Tutor Power library "Wednesday is my most favorite day of the week! That's the day you're here."

Hearing this from her student keeps OASIS tutor Mary Butorac coming back each week to volunteer with the Vista School District in North San Diego County. She spends time with each student to find out his or her interests and plans her sessions accordingly.

"It's a matter of experimenting until you find what works," Butorac says. She finds Tutor Power, OASIS' new online resource library, to be a valuable tool for finding activities for her students. "I used to spend twice as much time preparing for lessons," she adds. Butorac was so excited about the new library that she made a presentation at her monthly tutor support meeting to train other tutors in how to use it.

Developed with funding from Anheuser Busch and the Monsanto Fund, Tutor Power is a searchable database of session plans, books and activities that is accessible 24/7, making planning easier than ever.

Pat Mallory shows Wendy and Ray Orley how to use the Tutor Power library Wendy Orley and her husband Ray are tutors at Susie Ramos Marmon School in Albuquerque. A former teacher and librarian, she says the library is "definitely useful. It's good for directing you to activities on a topic or interest the kids express - like the 'Cookie Monster' - and ways to expand that topic."

"Tutor Power makes all of our resources accessible to our tutors in a much more convenient way," says Jan Clover, national tutoring coordinator. "It puts materials right at their fingertips."

Tutor Power also helps school district coordinators. They can easily print materials to use at tutor meetings, or recommend activities to match a child's interest. The ever-expanding library is searchable by keyword, book title, author and interest level.

For more information on accessing Tutor Power, OASIS tutors should contact their tutoring coordinator.
