OASIS Tutoring in East Harlem, NY

Share your love of reading with a child

Would you be willing to spend one hour a week doing something fun and fulfilling -- especially if you knew it could change a child’s life forever?

If your answer is “yes,” please consider being a tutor, mentor and friend for a child who needs help developing reading and language skills.

In partnership with OASIS, Union Settlement Association and AT&T New York, the award-winning OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program if offered in East Harlem’s public schools.

What is OASIS Tutoring?

Through the OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring program, volunteers, school districts, communities and OASIS work together to help children build reading skills, self-esteem and positive attitudes toward learning.

The need is great: Improving educational achievement is a high priority in East Harlem where 40% of children do not meet reading and math standards. The OASIS model is a proven success, reaching over 300,000 children in 21 cities. Evaluations show that students’ reading skills improve and their attitudes toward learning are transformed, while the volunteers gain satisfaction and pride from their roles as tutors and mentors.
