Mary Jo Summers and Raven Industries support OASIS tutoring
“I feel that tutoring allows me to help my community and myself,” says OASIS tutor Mary Jo Summers. “I get to make someone feel like they are the most important person and I feel important also.”
When Mary Jo discovered that her employer, Raven Industries
, allows their employees to take time from their busy schedules each week to volunteer in the community, she jumped at the opportunity. She began by reaching out to her local school district about volunteer opportunities and was referred to OASIS Tutoring. Shortly after her inquiry, Mary Jo received training and became as OASIS Tutor.
During her first year of tutoring, she fell in love with the program. “By stepping into the role of a tutor it allows me to see life through the eyes of a child,” Mary Jo says. She loves listening to a child read a page in a book as they learn a new word and seeing the smile on their face at their achievement.
At one of the OASIS tutor training sessions that Mary Jo attended, the school district coordinator mentioned that donations were needed to help support the tutoring program. “That made me think,” said Mary Jo. “Raven Industries is a great company. They encourage volunteering and they donate to other organizations, why not OASIS?”
Mary Jo contacted her human resources department at Raven Industries to ask about the requirements to request a donation to OASIS. She also contacted the OASIS development staff and they helped her create a letter to submit to Raven Industries. In the end, Mary Jo’s efforts paid off and OASIS was awarded a $1,000 gift from Raven Industries. According to Mary Jo, “It was a very easy process and I am glad I asked. I want to see OASIS grow to all states. OASIS is such a great resource for the schools.”
Mary Jo’s advice to anyone wondering whether or not their company will support programs they are involved in is, “Stop wondering and ask. You will be surprised how companies want to help their employees and community.”
