Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring Program Celebrates 30 Years of Impact

Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring Program Celebrates 30 Years of Impact

Since 1989, Oasis tutors and children have discovered the joy of reading together.

When an Oasis tutor spends one-on-one time with a child, the results are lasting for both generations.

Do you live the “Oasis lifestyle?”

In case you don’t know, the Oasis mission is this: Oasis is a pioneer of the three-pronged approach to successful aging – lifelong learning, active lifestyles and community involvement.
As a volunteer coordinator, I work closely with Oasis volunteers and realized recently that many of them are living, what my colleague refers to as the "Oasis lifestyle.” So what exactly does that mean?

Social groups help in combatting social isolation

A Women’s Roundtable helped Liz find a reason to get out of bed

Not long ago, one of our regular class participants, Liz Lippa came to Oasis after a rough weekend. Her son had a major heart attack and her cousin passed away. She was feeling low. “I just wanted to climb into bed and pull the covers over my head,” she said, but then she realized that what she really needed to do was to get out and talk. She got out of bed and headed to her St. Louis Oasis Women’s Roundtable group.

Margie Hobby helped her student find her voice

"I do a lot of volunteer work, but this is the one that feeds my soul."

When Margie Hobby retired, she wanted to stay active and connected, so she started taking classes and volunteering in her community. As she watched her student Vera progress, Margie found she had much to offer a child who was struggling and just needed more individual attention.

Thank you, Oasis CATCH Healthy Habits volunteers!

Without you, CATCH wouldn't be possible

To our CATCH Healthy Habits volunteers ... we can’t thank you enough for all you do to make your communities healthier for generations to come. In addition to teaching youth about healthy habits, you are also passing along knowledge and motivation to your peers and perhaps inspiring yourself too.

Kids say the darndest things

And their Oasis tutors love it!

A student told his Oasis tutor, "Wednesday is my favorite day. I get pizza for lunch and you!” Wouldn’t you love to know that you ranked #1 on someone’s list—right alongside pizza? That's just one of the many wonderful comments I hear from Oasis volunteer tutors. You can learn more about what it's like to be a tutor ... and rank #1 alongside pizza.

Getting healthy by giving back

The perfect volunteer opportunity is out there for you!

I don’t need research to tell me that volunteering improves the health of adults ages 50 and older; I see it every day at Oasis. Older adults who volunteer are more likely to maintain strength and functional ability, or the ability to perform every day activities, which is key to maintaining independence.

New school year excitement never fades, even long after graduation

Oasis tutors channel their good memories into helping kids today

This time of year I can’t help but start thinking about going back to school, and how much I looked forward to that when I was a kid. Oasis tutors have many reasons for both choosing to tutor, AND where they want to tutor. Perhaps they want to complete the circle, and come back to their neighborhood school.

About those labels

About those labels

When purchasing groceries, be sure to check the fine print.

Those nutrition labels might be hard to read, but it's worth learning how to decipher what they mean.
