Dear members, friends and supporters of San Diego OASIS,
In celebration of Valentine’s Day, we are tickled to share just a few OASIS love stories with you.

Don and Nadene's journey towards happiness together is a windy one, spanning over two decades. They believe that "happiness means being grateful for what you have.“ While Don and Nadene grew up in Hollywood about a mile from each other, they first met as working adults. Don smiles, remembering how "this cutie suddenly walked into my store.“ Still scarred from a previous relationship, Don broke her heart after a year of dating and took off traveling around the country. Some 20 years later they ran into each other again, and this time, in their 50s, were much more practical. Don planned the wedding on Father‘s Day, thinking this was a great strategy to never forget their wedding anniversary – both still laugh about the fact that the holiday moves every year and that Don should stay away from event planning. While Nadene is a true energizer bunny, Don is a happy homebody, tending to his bees, chickens, a cat and 4 dogs (the cat rules everyone in the household!). Together, they have participated in almost 100 OASIS classes, have been serving as enthusiastic OASIS Ambassadors at community events, have been supporting us with annual donations and graciously extending their help with Fashion Show planning (Nadene) and Art Gallery (Don). We are incredibly grateful for your love and support.

Lorraine and Jim
“Former priests and nuns wish to share new lifestyle with others," read the ad in the 1971 National Catholic Reporter. Having retired from the nunnery after 20 years of service as an educator, and awaiting the required dispensation of the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience from the Pope, the sense of loneliness was real. The ad held a promise of friendship with persons of similar background. A few letters later, a former priest from California was organizing a group of former priests and nuns. A few months later, I was excited to meet Jim, my new "pen and phone pal" face-to-face to get reassurance that the deep emotions we were feeling stemmed from love and not loneliness. Jim’s songs, poems, and lengthy letters had sustained me through the many days when I longed for his presence. On Easter Sunday of 1972, we held hands at Mass, and thanked God for the blessing bringing us together; two weeks later, I wed my Soul Mate, my Prince Charming, in the city where dreams could come true: Hollywood. We had been married 35 years before Jim passed away. By then he was Dr. Jim, with a Ph.D. in psychology as well as certifications as Marriage, Family and Child Counselor, Art Therapist and Sex Therapist. Thanks to the Cupid who wrote that ad!

Kathryn and Miles Harvey
60 years and then some... Miles was married for 62 years; Kathryn was the most independent 67-year-old who was never married. One might think this couple would be set in their ways and have some taboo topics in their new marriage. Not so. Both say they agree on everything: decorating styles, political views, music, cuisine, and travel. While Kathryn and Miles knew each other for years as friends and colleagues at the Luce Hamilton law firm, they reconnected after Miles lost his wife of 62 years. "Living in a fog," Miles felt that Kathryn could "help me through this fog and still be there at the end." While Miles was sure about his marriage proposal, Kathryn needed to be convinced. Today, they laugh about one's bad back and the other's bad leg, but they are as happy and confident about their future together as it gets. We appreciate Kathryn and Miles' support of OASIS as enthusiastic class participants, donors and legacy circle members.
