Meet Eddie Omens, San Diego Oasis Artist “in residence”

Eddie OmensSince 2008, Eddie Omens has been sharing his talents with San Diego Oasis members. As an instructor in our Arts curriculum, Eddie currently teaches everything watercolor – make your own watercolor greeting cards; paint outdoors at various sites around San Diego doing ‘pen and wash’; watercolor with your grandchildren; or sketch and draw with graphite and ink. His classes are extremely popular, and many of our members continue learning with Eddie from one semester to the next. His love of art shows in everything he does.

Originally from the south side of Chicago, Eddie always wanted to be an artist. But when life intervened, he chose dentistry, attending Loyola Medical School where he became an Oral Surgeon, including service in the military working with the US Public Health Service. He first arrived in San Diego in the 70’s, when he says it used to be easy to get around on the freeways. Eddie lived in La Jolla and Encinitas before moving to Mission Hills where he now resides with his amazing wife Mary Jane, “who is someone who understand me and is always supportive”. Eddie has four children who are doing well in their own space, such as psychologist in New York, professor at Mesa Community College, and one working for the government.

Once Eddie retired as the surgeon, he embraced his artistic interests and became an artist full time. He loves teaching people what he knows and likes to find ways to explain technique in fun ways. “If you like something, and have fun doing it, the more you do it, the better you will get.” He says, however, that if you try something and don’t like it, give it up. He took piano lessons once, and the teacher asked him if he practiced. He said “No,” and didn’t practice, and so decided it wasn’t for him. Eddie also loves books, and finds it hard to give one up, believing books are precious. He uses books as journals for his artwork, putting the art on pages to keep in the almost 100 journals at home.

He says painting is intuitive, fun, and full of emotion. It can be meditative. He encourages people to let their minds wander, to make up stories in their heads, and write things down – like a diary – to revisit what you see. His favorite medium is pen and watercolor. Pen for structure, watercolor for freedom. He likes to have an actual focus of a solid item to start the subject, and then build the painting around it.

On aging, Eddie, who along with his wife Maryjane, belong to the Oasis Donor Honor Society, believes it’s all in how you look at retirement and how you maintain your significance. He says men in retirement, more than women, need focus and a reason for being. “Men follow their wives around Costco – but what else do they actually do in retirement?” He says, “It’s inspirational to be involved with Oasis and watch some people willing to do what they need to do to participate in life…they find enthusiasm in whatever they are doing no matter what their situation may be.” He truly enjoys teaching at Oasis. We are grateful that he chooses Oasis, too!
