It weighs only three pounds yet it is the control center of our body, the human brain. Studies have suggested that like physical fitness, brain fitness can help improve creativity, relaxation and boost your memory. So how can we exercise our brain?
An experiment in laughter
“There is one thing in this good old world that is positively sure—happiness is for all who strive to be happy—and those who laugh are happy." The quote is from Hollywood icon, Douglas Fairbanks, from his book Laugh and Live.Though published in 1917, the sentiments expressed in the book are timeless. Laughter is good for you!
Getting healthy by giving back
I don’t need research to tell me that volunteering improves the health of adults ages 50 and older; I see it every day at Oasis. Older adults who volunteer are more likely to maintain strength and functional ability, or the ability to perform every day activities, which is key to maintaining independence.
Food safety is no joke
It was a long-standing joke in my family that when you took something out of the fridge you checked the expiration date. Many items went in the trashcan and my mother would be upset that food was wasted. Joking aside, food-borne illnesses are a serious public health threat that affects millions of Americans each year. Here's what you can do to help avoid them.
How to stop and enjoy the world around you? Try birdwatching
“Alert! Alert!” several of them chirped as others gathered in groups to discuss the intruder. The bird cacophony was directed at the uninvited guest that sat perched on the telephone pole. In this fast paced world, take time to stop and experience nature. Bird or butterfly watching is a simple and relaxing hobby.
How to help reduce your risk of falling

Silly Putty…the retro toy has other uses, too
What pink substance is a toy, a stress reliever and can be used to clean a computer keyboard? Silly Putty of course, an icon of American pop culture. It is the classic toy with only “one moving part” that comes in a plastic egg. While kids love its fun attributes like stretching without breaking, Silly Putty is used by adults in more practical applications.
Eating healthy and delicious
Gram always said, “If you have your health, you have everything.” Good health is the cornerstone on which to build your life’s goals and dreams. Whether your goals include a new career or a trip to an exotic locale, you will need the energy and focus that healthy eating provides, like this summer favorite, Spicy Fruit Salsa.
Five things I’ve learned while bike riding this summer
Like most kids, when I was growing up I rode my bike almost daily. Then my teenage years happened, and the bicycle lost all its luster and charm to the freedom of my first car. But all of that changed last summer when I bought a used bike at a garage sale for next to nothing. I’ve been off peddling and exploring, learning more about my neighborhood every day.
Gluten-free shopping
Even if you or someone you know does not suffer from a gluten allergy, if you have paid attention to the media lately or visited your local grocery store, there is a very good chance you have heard the expression “gluten-free.” Living with Celiac's disease, I have been gluten-free since long before it became a diet fad.
